For over a century, the designers and manufacturers at Eureka have been putting their expertise to work with innovation sitting at the forefront of new grinder models. In 2018, we saw a gigantic step forward in the form of their Atom Specialty 65 and 75 espresso grinders with the integration of Eureka’s patented Silent Technology and ACE (Anti-Clumps & Electrostacity) Systems. Now, with the Atom W 65 and Atom W 75, we’re seeing another progressive innovation by the team at Eureka: the introduction of a grind-by-weight feature.
While the Atom W 65 and 75 aren’t the first espresso grinders to implement a grind-by-weight system, it does mark a tremendous milestone for Eureka as this allows the company to bridge the gap between the home and commercial markets. The Atom W models are able to deliver comparable performance, construction quality, and a seamless workflow when compared to more expensive alternatives, making them a perfect choice for a commercial environment or an endgame espresso grinder for the serious home barista.
What is 'Grind-By-Weight'?
In the simplest terms, grinding by weight does exactly what it says. The user chooses the desired output of ground coffee and the grinder delivers the programmed dose. However, there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes that allows this system to work with the precision that’s needed for a well-extracted shot of espresso.
By now, we’re used to seeing potafilter forks below the grounds chute on espresso grinders for a hands-free workflow. What’s different about grind-by-weight machines is the integration of a load cell, or scale, into these forks. These load cells take multiple readings while your espresso is grinding to ensure that your pre-programmed dose is consistently and continuously met. In many shops where timed grinding is still being used, it’s common practice to weigh the output of ground espresso to ensure that the correct dose is being met. Grinding-by-weight completely cuts out this step, allowing for a much more simplified, yet speedier workflow.
What Are The Differences Between The Atom W 65 & the Atom W 75?
When deciding between the W 65 and W 75 grinders, the most significant factor to consider is the size of the burrs, which is conveniently reflected in the model names. Both grinders feature a 430W motor, with burrs that rotate at a speed of 1700 RPM. The primary distinction is in their grinding capabilities. The W 75 is notably quicker, capable of grinding 4-5 grams per second, while the W 65 produces between 3.3 and 3.8 grams per second. These values are averages and may fluctuate based on the grinding dose. Does this difference impact the quality of the coffee? In a typical home environment, it likely does not; however, for those who are working in a commercial setting or desire peak performance, the W 75 is the way to go. The W 65, on the other hand, still offers a significant improvement over the Eureka Mignon and Oro lines. In general, a larger burr size, coupled with a powerful motor, allows for grinding with less heat and friction, leading to a more aerated and evenly distributed grind. Additionally, if you are managing a coffee cart or seeking to enhance the performance of a small café, the W 75 will significantly expedite your workflow.
